As you probably already know, a student’s ability to read and write well contributes to the student’s overall success both in school and in the future. Many students, unfortunately, are not reading enough (particularly at middle level) to continue to develop and strengthen reading skills. Strong reading skills come with practice, and it is important that our students become the best readers possible. To this end, C.W. Perry will be using the Accelerated Reader program to encourage and provide regular, monitored reading time.
Your child’s success in reading depends on consistent practice at school and at home. We are recommending that all students read daily at home for a minimum of 15 to 30 minutes per night. Some of us are encouraging the use of a reading log to record the title and author so that the students can track their reading and test completion.
After each book is read, the students are asked to complete (at school) an on-line reading comprehension and/or vocabulary test for the book they have read. Teachers will be tracking the books read by using a point system, and students will be encouraged to keep up their reading through incentives developed by the home room teacher
